Safety Precautions
The experimental hall is a shared space where many users, staff, and visitors come and go. Please carry out experiments with due regard for the safety of all persons in the hall. Keep the hallway (3m from the wall) free of obstructions. The hallway is used as the evacuation route in emergencies. Since the experimental hall is not sprinklered, do not bring unnecessary combustible materials into the hall. Eating, drinking, or applying cosmetics in the radiologically controlled areas is strictly prohibited. To avoid any accident, do not work alone. As a general rule, students must work with other non-student team members.
Users wishing to bring hazardous materials into SPring-8/SACLA must report to the Beamline Scientist upon arrival at SPring-8/SACLA and receive safety instructions, especially on the use of the chemical cabinet. Hazardous materials must be kept and locked in the chemical cabinet when not in use. Please make sure to take the waste home for disposal. If you wish to bring any experimental equipment into SPring-8/SACLA, please make sure that there is no electric leakage or short circuit in advance. Special care should be taken when handling equipment with exposed electrical contacts such as SLIDACs.When you use the cooling water ports in the experimental hutch, please make sure that the equipment and pipes are designed to withstand pressure of 1 MPa or greater. To use the newly installed equipment, prior permission of the Beamline Scientist is required. Please be careful not to pour wastewater back into the system.
SPring-8 Network System
At SPring-8/SACLA, wireless Internet access is available under the advanced network system established for public use of SPring-8/SACLA.
Wireless Internet access requires your username, password and the pre-shared key:
Username | 7-digit SPring-8/SACLA User Card ID number |
---|---|
Password*
|
Password you created during the user registration |
Pre-Shared Key (PSK) | Available at the Users Office/Guest House reception desk. |
* If you forgot your password, you can retrieve your password through the password retrieval system.
Note: For conference/workshop participants, a special guest account is created upon request of the organizers. If you are a conference/workshop participant, please contact the organizers for the account information.

Safety Instructions
1. Cautions and Warning Signs
Keep away from the facilities with cautions and/or warning signs.
2. Low Temperature Work Handling Liquefied Gas
Wear appropriate protective gear. Also watch a video regarding the handling of ultra-low temperature liquefied gas at the Safety Office before use.
3. High Temperature Work Handling High Temperature Oven
Post a warning sign during high temperature operations. Please make sure to wear appropriate protective gear.
4. Heavy Load
Wear a helmet and safety shoes when you move heavy loads. If you wish to use a crane, please contact and consult with the Beamline Scientist.
5. Prevention and Control of Hazards: Working Alone/Overwork
Do not work alone. Please prepare a work plan with your team members and make sure that someone else is present during each experiment especially at night, weekends and holidays. Overwork can lead to a greater risk of accidents, injuries, and health problems. Make sure to get enough sleep and rest to prevent potential hazards.
In Case of Emergency
1. Emergency Phone Number
In the case of fire or an accident resulting in serious injury, please call the following number.
(DO NOT directly request an ambulance or fire truck by dialing external line 119.)
• Emergency internal line (extension) by Phone App: Call 131
• Emergency external line by external phone: Call 0791-58-0828
Note: Emergency internal line (extension) still available via on-campus PHS/desk phones: Call 119
And please give your name, telephone number, and location of the emergency, explain the situation and stay on the line until you are instructed to hang up. (The security guard at the Main Gate will call the fire department.)
This campus is large, and it is difficult to pinpoint locations.
Therefore, in the event of an accident or disaster, the security guard will guide the ambulance or fire truck to the scene.
2. Emergency Assembly Point
In case of fire or earthquake, please follow the directions given via the public address system, and evacuate to the places shown below. At the assembly points, please follow the directions of SPring-8/SACLA staff.
On October 1, 2007, the Japan Meteorological Agency launched the Earthquake Early Warning system. When a tremor (i.e. P-wave or initial tremor) is detected and strong tremors (an earthquake of seismic intensity 4 or larger on the Japanese scale) are expected in the vicinity of the SPring-8/SACLA site, the alarm will sound followed by a message and then the alarm and message will be repeated for 30 seconds through the SPring-8/SACLA public address system. When you hear the alarm and message, please:
1. Remain calm and ensure your safety.
2. Take cover under a sturdy table or desk. Stay away from glass and heavy objects.
3. When the shaking stops, check for fire hazards, help those who are injured and administer first aid if needed, and go to the nearest assembly point following the evacuation instructions given through the public address system. Do not use elevators.
3. Minor Injuries
In case of minor injuries, please dress the wound at the Health Office and contact the Users Office immediately. If you receive medical treatment at a hospital, please report to the Users Office at Ext. 2225 during regular office hours.
4. First-Aid Kit
First-aid kits are placed at each door, just outside the experimental hall.
Direct Call to Beamlines
You can call each beamline directly from outside SPring-8/SACLA. You are advised to ask potential callers to directly call the beamline extension/PHS number.
First, dial
+81-(0)791-58-0803
and when the connection is made, you will hear a tone. You may then dial the extension/PHS number.)
For the voice instructions, dial
+81-(0)791-58-0802.
If the called extension/PHS number is busy, please try again later.
